#11: Experimental Storytelling

#11: Experimental Storytelling

Can a hologram make you cry? Is there space for the classic Disney tear-jerker, yet warm, happy ending (that we’ve all grown accustomed to) on a Looking Glass? Last year, Game Designer/Artist Noca Wu and I created an experimental holographic narrative called Halfway to find out.

Noca and I wanted to tackle the challenge of creating a non-interactive narrative in what is traditionally depicted as a highly interactive holographic environment.

It’s a primarily 2D art in a 3D unity worldspace because we also wanted to push the conventions of the hologram — and see if handcrafted, cut-out drawings could breathe and tell a story in a space we haven’t seen them before.

The story is short, simple, and loop-able — an allegory of what it means to become friends with another and a metaphor for how we re-learn these lessons of friendships over and over again throughout our lives.

You can experience Halfway here.

*this is part of our “100 Days of Holograms” series, where Missy Senteio and Shawn Frayne of Looking Glass Factory post one new wonderful or weird (or both!) use for the Looking Glass holographic display each day.
